While this is Chris’ debut at Dazzle leading a band, he is no stranger to the Dazzle stage performing many times as a sideman with Regina Carter, Allison Miller, and Matt Wilson.
Bassist-composer Chris Lightcap comes to Dazzle with his critically acclaimed “supergroup” Bigmouth, featuring the formidable talents of Craig Taborn, Tony Malaby, Chris Cheek and Gerald Cleaver. The band’s latest release, “Epicenter,”‘ was named one of the top CDs of 2015 by the NY Times, NPR and the LA Times. Lightcap has worked with numerous artists including Regina Carter, John Medeski, Chris Potter, John Scofield, Anthony Braxton, and Sheila Jordan, and is featured on over 60 albums. On the heels of Bigmouth’s acclaimed 2010 CD, Deluxe, he was awarded a Chamber Music America New Jazz Works grant, culminating in the suite “Lost and Found: New York,” which is featured on Epicenter.
“…bold, mellifluous writing and subtle bandleading smarts….outstanding.” – Hank Shteamer, TimeOut New York
“…a jazz supergroup …Lightcap is channeling the bass thrum and compositional spirit of Charles Mingus, mixed with the genre daredevilry of Sex Mob or the Bad Plus.” – Britt Robson, JazzTimes
“Lightcap’s compositions send beautiful, interwoven harmonies over knotted, West African rhythms… sounding both expansive and melancholic at times.”
(Dan Sorrells,The Free Jazz Collective).
In addition to numerous US appearances, Bigmouth has performed at major festivals throughout Europe including Willisau, Saalfelden, North Sea, Porto, Ljubljana, Maribor and Edinburgh.
